Wildfires warning issued by Northumberland Fire Group after dry spring

A warning has been issued about the high risk of wildfires in the Northumberland countryside after a dry spring.

Northumberland Fire Group is urging residents and visitors to take extreme care when out and about,

The recent easing coronavirus lockdown rules has seen more people seeking fresh air and exercise in the hills and coastal dunes of Northumberland.

“With no significant rainfall over much of the county for the last 10 weeks, our hills and coastal areas are now in great danger of suffering from devastating wildfire caused by people’s carelessness” said Angus Collingwood-Cameron, chairman of the Northumberland Fire Group.

“I appreciate that people are desperate to get out and enjoy themselves after weeks of lock down, but please can everyone show care and respect for our countryside and its wildlife.

“Going by the evidence of camp fires and disposable barbecues left in the Cheviots and elsewhere across the county last weekend, it is only by the grace of God that we did not suffer a wildfire incident.”

“Wildfires at this time of year are particularly heart breaking as our upland wildlife is busy breeding. No one wants to see curlew chicks and baby hares injured or killed by fire.

“If you do visit our hills or coastal areas, please do not light fires or barbecues, and do not drop litter or cigarettes. Never use sky lanterns. Please be vigilant and keep our wildlife and countryside safe. Keep Northumberland beautiful.”
