Results revealed on how to protect Alnwick's damage-hit Bondgate Tower

The 15th Century gatehouse was clipped by a high-sided vehicle on June 11 which caused some internal scraping and took a chunk from the top of the west-facing arch.

Historic England has previously warned that the building might need to be closed if further substantial damage occurred.

Alnwick Civic Society carried out a poll on social media to see what measures people would support to protect the tower.

The most popular option was better signage (40%). Almost one in three wanted to add some metal bars to restrict height and a smattering supported moving the tower elsewhere, or doing nothing other than repairs.

The civic society, in its latest newsletter, adds that a ‘significant minority’ also supported its closure to traffic completely.

The gatehouse, also known as Hotspur Gate, was founded around 1450 by the 2nd Earl of Northumberland.
