There have been issues caused by nesting birds at The Shambles in Market Street.

The matter was raised by Coun Gordon Castle at a meeting of Alnwick Town Council.

Coun Castle, member for Alnwick on Northumberland County Council, said: "We’ve got nesting pigeons in The Shambles causing a right mess and the lady in The Wool Shop has been having a hard time with that so I do sympathise.

"Despite pigeons being vermin you can’t actually disturb them when they are nesting.

"We’re going to block all those apertures off the top on Tuesday which should cure it. It’s a prompt bit of action by the county.

"We do need to have a better plan for cleaning The Shambles out. You can’t get the kit that we use for cleaning the streets up the steps and along the inside of The Shambles, so that’s the difficulty.”
