Northumberland residents asked to 'do their bit' during The Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean is all about showing you care about the environment on your doorstep, as well as making a positive impact by clearing litter pollution from your local street, park or beach.

Litter remains a huge problem across the country, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils in England having to spend over £700million on street cleaning services every year.

The council is once again encouraging and supporting groups, individuals and their own staff and councillors who want to ‘do their bit’ to help clear up the litter from streets, parks and beaches.

Officers will be on hand to give advice, and essential equipment can be loaned to groups who want to collect litter.

The council also wants to see and share residents’ litter pic photos. These can be shared by tagging it on Twitter @N_LandCouncil with the hashtag #NlandSpringClean

Counc Glen Sanderson, cabinet member for the environment and local services, said: “We are rightly proud of our beautiful county and we are determined to do all we can to keep it that way.

“It’s more important than ever we all do our bit to keep Northumberland clean and tidy and we want to encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations as possible to take part in the spring clean.

“I’ve already encouraged my fellow local councillors to become involved and help join events in the county.

“We can offer equipment, waste collection and all the advice and guidance that groups might need. Together we can make a real difference and clean up the environment on our doorsteps.”

Last year, more than 560,000 people took part across the country and in 2020 organisers are aiming to get 600,000 Litter Heroes out and about.
