Volunteer litter pickers have been out and about in Alnwick over the Easter weekend.

Among the areas targeted was The Rec between Ratton Row and Lower Barresdale where several bags of rubbish, mainly alcohol bottles and cans, were collected.

Beth Gascoigne, writing on the group’s Facebook page, said it was the worst she had seen it in a long time.

"I thought we were getting somewhere but the utter disrespect shown in this area is unbelievable,” she said.

“Locals should feel very lucky that we have a large field for kids to play in, dogs to run around in, a community centre working hard for them and a play park for the littlies but clearly it's just a place to drink in, use as a giant litter bin and basically just cause utter havoc in."

Peter’s Mill, South Road, The Pastures, Greensfield bridleway, the bus station and Alnwick Moor were also tackled by members of Alnwick and District Litter Pickers.
