Deceased whale spotted floating in the sea off the Northumberland coast
An object, believed to be a deceased whale, has been seen floating in the sea off the Northumberland Coast.
The upsetting sight of a deceased humpback whale floating off the Northumberland coast has been reported in local whale spotting groups on Facebook.
Members of the groups have said the Coast Guard and the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) have been informed.
It comes after dolphins and a humpback whale were spotted swimming in the area last week, in what was described as an experience of “pure bliss”.
According to the Sea Watch Foundation the humpback whale is a “scarce species” in the North East, but the number of sightings has increased in 2019 and 2020.
The Coast Guard has confirmed they are aware of an object, believed to be a whale, floating in the sea off the Northumberland Coast.
If you spot a deceased whale ashore, contact the CSIP on 0800 6520333, who can investigate the reasons for its death.
