Coast protector seeks new partner

THE partnership that protects the north Northumberland coastline is looking for someone to represent the parish and town councils in the Alnwick area.

The Northumberland coast between Berwick and the Coquet estuary is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) in recognition of its superb landscape quality.

The responsibility for championing the conservation and enhancement of the AONB lies with the AONB Partnership, whose key role, among others, is to oversee the production and implementation of a management plan to guide Northumberland County Council and other organisations in securing a sustainable future for the AONB and the people that live and work in, and enjoy visiting, the area.

The partnership seeks to represent all the various agencies and groups who have a stake in the governance of the AONB.

It includes two seats to represent all the parish and town councils that are within or adjoining the AONB: one for the former Berwick Borough Council area, the other the ex Alnwick District Council area.

Previously, the Alnwick area was represented by Kathryn Potts, a Newton by the Sea councillor, but there is now a vacancy for this position.

Pat Scott, chairman of the AONB Partnership, paid tribute to Kathryn and her work.

“Kathryn was a very capable and active member of the partnership. She championed local distinctiveness, especially local food and drink which is produced through the land use that shapes the character of this wonderful coastline.

“The partnership really appreciated the energy Kathryn invested in working for the AONB. I know she will continue to do so, albeit through other endeavours than on the partnership.”

Mel Nicholls, AONB officer, said “The seat is open to anyone who is active in their local parish or town council, cares about the future of the AONB and can spare a few days a year to attend meetings and events.

“Prospective candidates are advised to contact their local council to seek their nomination to represent them and fellow councils.”

The closing date is Thursday, November 17.
