Entries flood in for junior triathlon

Alnwick Tri Juniors are hosting their first-ever junior triathlon this summer, and its organisers are delighted to have seen most of the 100 places on offer taken just days after it opened for entries.

The event will take place at the Druridge Bay Country Park, nearHadston, on the morning of Sunday, July 3, by permission of Northumberland County Council.

Unusually for a junior event, it includes an open-water swim, in the shallow waters of Ladyburn Lake, with full safety cover.

The bike course will then take the triathletes along a scenic, traffic-free road route between the park and the dunes before completing the race with a run around the footpaths and meadow tracks on the south side of the lake.

There will be four different races for age groups from nine up to 16, and the event is open to everyone, although children must be competent swimmers and wearing a wetsuit is compulsory.

To grab one of the last available spaces, entrants should visit www.alnwicktriathlon.co.uk/?page_id=1716.

It costs from £20 to enter, and that includes a race T-shirt and medal for all finishers.

This event is one of only three open-water junior triathlon events in Northumberland this season, and it has the support of Triathlon England.

It is part of the North East junior grand prix series of events, and is attracting young athletes from across the region.

Registration opens at 6am on the day, and the first race will get under way at 7.30am.
