It will be one of the last chances to hear the ensemble, which brings its 35-year career to an end next spring.

Alongside two well-loved pieces by Beethoven and Brahms will be a new work by Charlotte Bray, a distinctive and outstanding talent of her generation.

The Beethoven piece will be his Piano Trio in D major, known as The Ghost because of its eerily plaintive middle movement, said to be influenced by music he had been planning to accompany the witch’s scene for an opera based on Macbeth, which never materialised.

Brahms’ First Piano Quartet is believed to be partially influenced by his love for Clara Schumann, who played the piano part in its first performance. It ends with a wonderful Hungarian gypsy rondo.

Charlotte Bray’s Zustände for Piano Quartet, commissioned by the Schubert Ensemble, was first performed in March this year. Inspired by a visit to Greenland, this work evokes the majesty and drama of glaciers and icebergs.

The concert begins at 7.30pm. For more information, visit alnwickmusicsociety.co.uk
