Amended plans have been put forward for a play area at a Rothbury housing development but not all councillors are happy with it.

The Whitton View scheme has been at the centre of a planning wrangle after the original developer, McInerney Homes, went into administration. It was obliged to create the play area as part of the agreement to create a new estate, but failed to do so. The site has since been taken over by Miller Homes, which has put forward a revised layout for the park.

Coun Gilson said: “Based on the survey that I did with the two village schools, this contains most of the equipment they said they wanted. This is so much of an improvement over what was on offer that I would be inclined to say we grab it and say goodbye to this problem.”

But Coun Alan Fendley said: “If you’re looking at the site itself, it still constitutes a potential safety hazard. There is still a precipitous slope and a drainage problem. Yes, we’ll get a few swings in an area which is fenced off, but the whole thing is a mess.”

Coun Bridgett added: “The whole situation from the outset has been badly handled and badly enforced.”
