At 8.57pm, UK Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses All Weather Lifeboat to assist NEAS as the causeway was closed by the tide.

As the ambulance dispatched was from Belford Ambulance Station, it was directed to Seahouses.

A statement from Seahouses RNLI Lifeboat Station said: ‘On arrival of the ambulance, the lifeboat was ready to launch and the coxswain decided to launch to minimise any delay in getting medical assistance to the casualty.

‘The paramedic was taken aboard and the lifeboat set off for Holy Island. One of the Seahouses crew aboard was also a local doctor.

‘However, the tide was receding and there was concern that the lifeboat may not be able to land at the Holy Island jetty.

‘Following further information from local coastguards on Holy Island, the lifeboat was stood down at 9.30pm and returned to the harbour and the ambulance crew travelled by road to the island as the causeway was reported then safe to cross.’

A NEAS spokesman said that an ambulance attended a medical incident at a private address on Holy Island at about 9.30pm last night, driving across the causeway with a boat escort nearby.

A HM Coastguard Holy Island statement said: ‘The team was tasked last night at 9pm by Coastguard Operations Centre Humber to assist the North East Ambulance Service with a casualty on Holy Island.’
