Members of the public attempted to put the fire out, which was between two other cars and close to buildings on Bondgate Within, while waiting for the firefighters to arrive.

A spokesperson from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at 2:45pm on Monday reporting a car on fire at Bondgate Within in Alnwick town centre. A fire engine crew were in attendance until the fire was extinguished at 3:04pm.”

A witness of the fire, who would like to stay anonymous, said: “I didn't see how it started but noticed there was a bit of commotion outside. People were trying to help with fire extinguishers, either their own or from nearby businesses, but nothing helped.

"A couple of the tyres exploded with the heat but luckily no one was hurt.”
