Embleton WI, December meeting

FESTIVE MEETING: With a slight break in the Arctic weather, members of Embleton WI were able to meet at Creighton Hall for their December Christmas meeting.

The president, Lady Craft chaired the business meeting.

The latest information from county headquarters was discussed including details on an Oxfam maternity health petition aimed as part of a campaign to improve maternal health care in poor countries.

Parcels collected in November for the Newcastle Refuge had been handed over to a representative and further details were given of the work of the Refuges and of the people who need shelter there.

The finalised details of the forthcoming programme was given to the members who can look forward to another interesting year in 2011.

Members were reminded that subscriptions were due in January.

Business completed, the president welcomed the members of Embleton Handbell Ringers who played a selection of carols to get the WI members into the Christmas spirit.

The Handbell Ringers who meet weekly in Embleton have increased their membership to ladies from other nearby villages and enjoy keeping alive a dying musical pastime.

Following the entertainment members and visitors enjoyed a Christmas tea prepared by the members and also had their brains tested by a quiz organised by the treasurer.

Two of the visitors judged the monthly competition for an object ‘Z’ which had produced an interesting range of entries, 1 Mrs J Laidler, 2 Miss J Littler, 3 Lady A Craft.
