ELECTIONS: Parishes need new members

Parish Councils are a vital part of local democracy and enable communities.

Their work falls into three main categories: Representing the local community, delivering services to meet local needs, and striving to improve the quality of life in the local area.

Parish councillors have the opportunity to lead and present their communities.

Formal notices of election will be displayed across Northumberland seeking candidates for our parish councils.

There are some communities which do not currently have a parish council. Working with the county council’s elections team, we have discovered that parish councils were created for these areas in the 1950s, but they have been dormant for some years.

The dormant councils are Akeld, Bewick, Earle, Easington, Ewart, Ilderton, Kilham, Roddam and Snitter.

I am the adviser for parish councils in Northumberland and if any resident of these areas is interested in standing as a councillor, please don’t hesitate to contact me for some information.

Chief Officer, Northumberland Association of Local Councils
