A north Northumberland school has scored thousands of pounds of funding to help it bolster leisure facilities at the site, which can be used by students, staff and the community.

James Calvert Spence College (JCSC) in Amble scooped £9,918 through the Small Grants Programme, Sport England, following a bid for cash.

The money has gone towards creating a new dance studio and fitness suite at the Acklington Road site.

It has also allowed the school to purchase modern gym equipment, such as treadmills, exercise bikes, a rowing machine and a cross-trainer, as well as a weightlifting bench and dumbbells.

As part of the revamp, JCSC consulted with its pupils to see what equipment and facilities they would like.

The work has also allowed the school to expand its curriculum, with JCSC now offering dance as a subject.

Amy Geraghty, business manager at JCSC, said: “PE hadn’t had any money invested on it for quite a while so we thought that this was a good opportunity.

“The fitness suite was part of the sports hall refurbishment which included the provision of a dance studio that may also be used by the community as well as our students. We converted two store cupboards to create the fitness suite while the dance studio is a former music room.

“We were delighted to receive the money from Sport England, which helped us to fully furnish the suite with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities and they are already proving a great success with users.”

Professional dancer Martin Hylton has returned to the school to run a series of dance workshops, just for boys.

Sport England is committed to helping people and communities across the country create sporting habits for life.

This means investing in organisations and projects that will get more people playing sport and creating opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.

The Small Grants programme uses Lottery funding to make awards of between £300 and £10,000 to not-for-profit organisations to help more people play sport.
