Editor’s Comment: Hard work pays off for the Olympic Torch Relay

There is no doubt that the hard work and dedication of all the agencies involved in bringing the Olympic Torch Relay through Northumberland deserve a special mention.

Northumberland County Council, Northumbria Police, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), town and parish councils, community groups, Culture Creative and more worked together to make sure that everything ran smoothly and without a hitch – and it did.

From police high-fiving youngsters as they led the Olympic Torch convoy along the routes to the work going on behind the scenes, every little detail was carefully crafted.

And it was because of this that the relay was so well attended during its two days in north Northumberland.

The crowds in Alnwick and Bamburgh, which basked in sunshine on Thursday, are testament to the community spirit that flows through our veins.

But that spirit was even more evident in places like Amble and Warkworth on Friday, where crowds descended despite torrential downpours and strong winds.
