A motorist is in a critical condition following a crash in Northumberland this morning.

At 10.11am, police were informed a vehicle had crashed into a hedgerow on the A696 between Ponteland and Belsay. The road was closed for a short time.

The driver of the vehicle, a red Suzuki Jimny, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition is currently critical. The passenger, a woman, was taken to hospital with less serious injuries.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the Suzuki Jimny in the area around the time of the collision. It’s thought a silver car and a red car were in the area at the time of the crash. These cars were not involved in the collision, however, it’s thought the drivers or passengers may have witnessed the collision or seen the vehicle shortly before it happened.

Any witnesses should ring Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 698 260615.
