The significant work package requires a four-week road closure and will see installation of a new drainage system to tackle surface-water flooding.

Nearby residents and those passing regularly along the route, including local farmers, have been plagued by sometimes deep and impassable waters after prolonged downpours.

Coun Kate Cairns said: “I have been working hard for some time to bring this project to fruition. It has not been straightforward, with added complications due to the close proximity of the railway line.

“I am delighted that this work is now starting and will solve such a long-standing problem for local residents.”

The route from Fallodon to Allansford will be closed for four weeks from Monday (March 13), from 8.30am until 5pm.

Local landowner Mark Bridgeman added: “For decades, the road has flooded whenever there is a large amount of rain. I have been chasing the council for years, and my father before me, to resolve the problem.

“Coun Kate Cairns has been pushing for this and ensured that the work will to be done. It is fantastic that the council is now addressing the problem with a proper permanent drainage scheme for which we are very grateful.”
