And it comes at a time when the vital service is appealing for help to find a new and permanent venue to store and pack parcels.

The town’s TSB branch has presented the food bank with a cheque for £125, as part of its nationwide community pride donation programme.

It is a welcome boost just before Christmas, when the number of parcels handed out tends to increase compared to other times of the year.

Steve Cassie, trustee of Amble Food Bank, thanked the company for the money, saying that it will ‘really make a difference to us and to the community here in Amble’.

Karen Henry, bank manager at TSB in Amble, added: “Being part of our local community is really important to us at TSB and so we’re delighted to be able to help Amble Food Bank with this donation.

“We donated this money to Amble Food Bank because of the important work it does to help the community.”

The food bank was started more than four years ago by the late Alan Rapley who, as a result of volunteering at the Amble Citizens Advice Bureau, saw many people requiring help following a drastic change in their circumstances.

Since forming, the service has played a crucial part in helping vulnerable and needy members in the town and surrounding areas. But the food bank is searching for a new base. The service is currently using one of the town’s churches as a temporary measure for storage and packing food parcels, but members want to find a permanent home, and they are appealing for help.

Mary Rapley, from the food bank, said: “We are sure that someone in or around Amble has a spare room that could be made available.

“It needs to be secure, able to be accessed twice a week and mouse-free! Clients will not come here, as parcels are distributed elsewhere following referral from agencies.”
