An elderly woman was treated for face and hand injuries after she was attacked by a dog in the street.
The 72-year-old was found by police on the Cornhill Estate in Alnwick after intervening to save her dog, which had been attacked by a Japanese Akita.
The woman was taken to Alnwick Infirmary where she received treatment for minor injuries to her face and hands.
Police said that the woman was shaken by the ‘isolated incident’ and she and her dog are recovering at home.
The Akita dog has been found and destroyed with the owner’s permission.
The owner is to be interviewed by police today.
