Rescue crews in north Northumberland were called out yesterday afternoon to help a diver suffering from the bends.

The call went out to Howick Coastguard Rescue Team, Seahouses Coastguards and Seahouses Lifeboat Station at 1.25pm yesterday.

The casualty was brought into Seahouses by lifeboat, while the Coastguard teams set up a helicopter landing zone for the Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter from Prestwick (Glasgow). The patient was airlifted to the decompression chamber at Aberdeen.

Then, at 2.10pm, Howick Coastguard Rescue Team received a report of a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) with engine problems coming into Beadnell Bay. The team was tasked by Humber Coastguard Operations to meet the boat and offer assistance if required.

Advice was given about life-jackets and registering the vessel with the Coastguard. Assistance was again received from Seahouses Coastguards.
