DEVELOPMENT: A win-win proposal
It was great to see Northumberland County Council's commitment to Amble's James Calvert Spence College, following the new high school for Alnwick, (Northumberland Gazette, February 23).
Your leader hopes that when the middle school site in South Road becomes vacant it can be “utilised in the best way possible”.
Here’s an idea – use it for 100 houses with access straight off the A1068.
This would provide far more sustainable housing much nearer the shops than the current oversized, 500-house, greenfield proposal, with minimal effect on Acklington Road congestion, no loss of agricultural land, no effect on the future bypass route and a sale price that would make the school redevelopment even better value for the community, the county council and ratepayers.
It would mean a loss of educational land, but there is still a large plot of undeveloped educational/recreational land immediately to the West so I don’t believe this would be a significant loss.
It’s a win-win, or is that too logical?
