Development site on Holy Island goes up for sale

A rare opportunity has arisen to develop a site on Holy Island.

Chartered surveyor Bradley Hall is marketing a 0.74-acre site, currently used as a car park, on Green Lane. The stone wall-bordered site is located on the outskirts of the village.

However, the Vicar of Holy Island, Rev Paul Collins, has expressed his ‘profound concern’ at Northumberland County Council’s moves to sell the site.

“It seems has been done without any consultation,” he said. “It demonstrates a complete lack of democratic accountability or transparency and appears to be a cynical and reckless act. I hope very much the council will reconsider this move. The short-term gain of money versus the long-term loss to the environment of the island is mind-boggling in its crassness.”

The council hopes to sell around half the existing gravel car park and part of the little-used, grassed overflow area as part of its effort to increase capital receipts.

If a buyer can be found, the council would retain the public toilets and improve the whole of the retained car-parking area by creating a hard-surfaced area equivalent to the existing one, to ensure provision for disabled people and coach parking is maintained at the site to support tourism.

A council spokesman said: “The council is aware of the sensitivities of this site which sits within the Holy Island Conservation Area and any development would need to be sympathetically designed.”

Tim Aisbitt, associate director at Bradley Hall, said: “Holy Island is a small, discreet and unique community. This development site, located on the edge of the village, offers a genuinely rare development opportunity on one of the UK’s most spectacular islands.

“With stunning views and all the local amenities on your doorstep, this site is suitable for a variety of uses within this hugely popular tourist destination. A full development brief is available to interested parties.”
