You would think such a jewel in Northumberland’s crown would be cherished by the county council, but instead it appears to be selling off parts of the island to help pay for its new £80million luxury headquarters in Ashington.
The Union Chain Bridge, the oldest surviving iron chain suspension bridge still in use in Europe, is in need of repair, and the beautiful Duiridge Bay could be ripped apart by an opencast mine.
