Derelict Spittal site could be demolished

The derelict old engine sheds in Tweedmouth could be demolished to make way for housing.

Local businessman Frank Flannigan has submitted a pre-planning application for the old engine shed site off Billendean Road in Spittal.

He has held initial discussions with the planning department at Northumberland County Council about the potential for housing on the 8,577 sq m site. However, there is no indication at this stage as to how many properties are envisaged.

Berwick Town Council’s planning committee has welcomed the potential demolition of the derelict units.

Mayor Ivor Dixon said: “I think most people would be pleased to see the engine sheds demolished. The roof has totally caved in.

“However, if there are going to be houses on that site there could be traffic issues because Billendean is an awkward place to come out of.”
