Dent hits century as Warkworth go down to Ashington in league

Warkworth suffered a 121 run defeat when they travelled to take on Ashington Rugby in the Northumberland Premier League on Saturday.

David Dent hit a superb 125 off 143 balls, and Matthew Tarney weighed in with a more than useful 69 as Ashington put on a big score of 315-6.

It was a target Warkworth were always likely to struggle to reach, and so it proved, despite the efforts of Chris Glass (36), Michael Sewell (28), Ian Clough (24) and Scott Gibson (23).

With Scott Maddison taking 4-40 the Castle side ended up on 194 all out.

Ulgham went down to a 150-run defeat at home to Corbridge.

David Smurthwaite hit 62 not out, Andrew Dover 57 and Matthew Thompson 46 as Corbridge posted a big target of 267-7.

David Loxham took 4-64 for Ulgham, who in reply struggled with the bat until Mark Plummer hit a late 45, the team being all out for 117, with Douglas McKendrick taking 5-39.

Tillside won a close low scoring game down at Blagdon.

Batting first, on what looked a good batting track, Tillside were soon in trouble however as an excellent opening spell by Johnson and Cuthbertson meant scoring was difficult and the visitors lost two early wickets.

When Liam Hindmarsh went for 17 and Jake Birkett quickly followed him Tillside were in trouble at 26-4. Law Atkinson (22) and Duncan Sim (25) set about rebuilding the innings and the pair added 44 for the fifth wicket before spinner Gibson removed Atkinson.

Fellow spinner Ali Clarke who finished with 4-47 then picked up three quick wickets and at that stage Tillside were 86-9. Ben Toulson 14no and Alan Hindmarsh put 20 vital runs on for the last wicket, before Hindmarsh became Angus Johnsons third victim, being all out for 106.

In reply though Blagdon made a worse start as Birkett and Hindmarsh picked up early wickets to leave the home side 5-3 from five.

Matty Senior and Mark Foster took the score to 58 and set the home side on for victory before Senior (26) became Birkett’s third victim with the seamer getting extra bounce to have him caught at forward short leg.

Duncan Sim who bowled an excellent spell with 2-16 had Foster and Simpson out in quick succession and reduced Blagdon to 61-6. Cam McGregor kept it tight picking up two wickets and Blagdon were 87-9.

However, they didn’t manage to add the runs like their opponents for the 10th wicket and were all out for 95 with Alan Hindmarsh bowling Cuthbertson to win the game.

In Division 1, Warenford had a big win over Clara Vale.

Brian Thompson hit 84, Michael Thompson 65, Daniel patterson 36 and Graham Rogerson 35 as Waren posted decent score of 271-8.

Usman Saeed took 5-66 for Clara, who in their innings were all out for 158 with Saeed and Sadiq Amin both hitting 52. Rogerson was waren’s most successful bowler with figures of 3-38.

In Division 2 Tillside seconds recorded a comfortable 6sixwicket victory as they beat Blue Flames seconds at home.

Batting first, openers Myers (50) and Mark Moody (70) put on 110 for the first wicket and with number three Potdar scoring 31 Blue Flames were on for a high score. However, the rest of the bats struggled but they still finished on a decent 190ao from 39 overs, Davy Robertson being the pick of the bowlers with 3-44.

In reply it was skipper Jamey Pick who was the star man as he led the side home with 97no. He was well supported by Calum Bickerton (22) and Dave Reay with 37 as the home side knocked them off in the 34th over.

In Division 3, Wooler travelled to take on Monkseaton 3rds on Sunday and returned with a seven wicket win to their credit.

The home side batted first, but they lost five early wickets, and it was only a knock of 40 from middle-order batsman Andrew rees which saved them.

Other wickets contin ued to tumble, with no other home bat in double figures, and they were all out for 83 in the 32nd over.

Andrew Aitchison did most of the damage with a fine spell which saw him take 6-12.

In reply, the Glendale side lost Lee Porteous early on, but Angus Todd (40) and Ian Clarke (27 not out) saw them coast to victory at 85-3 in less than 23 overs.

Also in Division 3, Alnmouth and Lesbury had a six wicket home win over Rock.

Kieran North top-scored with 46 as the visitors put on 140, with Thorsten Robertson taking 3-42.

Alnmouth and Lesbury then coasted to victory with 144-4 in 39 overs.
