The long-running project has included repairs to the roof and internal structure, improving the drainage system and fixing and cleaning the clock mechanism.

Funding from Amble Town Council and the War Memorials Trusts helped pay for the overhaul of the monument, which is a listed structure located in the Town Square.

And in an amazing response, members of the community also rallied around the cause to raise thousands of pounds for the work.

Speaking on Tuesday, Amble Mayor Coun Craig Weir thanked everyone who has helped and said he was delighted that the repairs have been completed, especially in time for this year’s Remembrance Day – particularly poignant as it marks the centenary of the end of the First World War.

He said: “It has been a long job, but this is because a listed building needs specialised firms to carry out the work.”
