Last year's winners at the Best of Northumberland Awards prize-giving ceremony, held at The Alnwick Garden.

Today is the last chance to nominate your community heroes for this year’s Best of Northumberland Awards.

Readers are being encouraged to put forward individuals and groups in the county who go above and beyond the call of duty and/or show incredible strength and courage in the face of adversity.

Organised by Northeast Press – publishers of the Northumberland Gazette, Morpeth Herald and News Post Leader – and Tweeddale Press’s Berwick Advertiser – the annual Best of Northumberland Awards are a celebration of bravery, determination, commitment and achievement.

We are looking for people who have managed to do something extraordinary for the benefit of themselves or others.

As part of the awards, Phoenix Taxis, which is the largest electric and hybrid taxi company in the UK, is sponsoring the Lifetime Contribution category.

This prize honours people who have succeeded against all odds or think nothing of putting others before themselves.

The company’s managing director, Alex Hurst, said: “As a Northumberland-based business, operating from Blyth, the awards are right up our street.

“This is because the Best of Northumberland Awards reward the people in our community who, in their everyday lives, have managed to do something extraordinary for the benefit of themselves and others.

“These people are real unsung heroes and we should be very proud of them.”

Phoenix is a family-run business and provides taxi, minibus and coach services across Northumberland, Tyneside and Newcastle.

It has made huge steps towards becoming environmentally sustainable. Phoenix was the first UK company to use 100 per cent electric taxis and now has a fleet of 20 electric taxis and 50 hybrid low-emission taxis.

The Best of Northumebrland Awards are split into 12 categories. As well as Lifetime Contribution, there is also Sporting Achievement; Community Group; Community Champion; Child of Courage; Emergency Services Award; Role Model; Green Champion; Child of Achievement; Fund-raiser of the Year; Good Neighbour; Volunteer of the Year.
