The organisers of Northumberland’s first Pride festival – held earlier this month to great acclaim – have moved fast to announce the date of next year’s event.

Chairman Lorna Stewart-Hook said: “We have secured the date of Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Alnwick Rugby Club.

“At this stage, our plans are top secret, but over the next 12 months we will be engaging with the community, forming much-needed LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) support, and will bring all of this together in a fantastic way like Northumberland has never seen before.

“We have a lot of work to do over the next 12 months and with the visibility of our successful debut event this month, we can move forward LGBT+ services and support networks within the county.”

The debut Pride event featured a march from Alnwick Market Place to the rugby club, where there was live music – with X Factor finalist Niki Evans as the headline act – stalls, a fun-fair and a family area.

It attracted plenty of positive feedback and inspired various sections of the community to get involved.

One picture, above, which epitomises this is of Joan, who was brought out by her carers to watch the march and proudly held a rainbow flag.

The image has been well received, with nearly 500 reactions (likes or loves) on the Northumberland Pride Facebook page.
