A north Northumberland dancer is off to the States to study at a prestigious dance school in New York.
Eliot Smith won a place and part-scholarship at the famous Martha Graham School last year, but had to raise £20,000 towards the costs before he could attend. Since August, he managed to save £10,000 and now he has been told he can go without securing the rest of the funds.
The 22-year-old also set up his own dance school – the Eliot Smith Company – at the age of 14.
Last month, he was given the backing and support of Warkworth Parish Council to house the company at Warkworth Memorial Hall, which he will use as rehearsal space for himself and his dancers and also put on classes for all ages.
Next Saturday (2pm and 7pm) and Sunday (2pm), the company will perform two of Eliot’s early works and an improvised dance to celebrate its first residency at the hall. Entry free, but donations welcome.
