When is Raoul Moat documentary on TV? 'Manhunt' to air a decade on from murderous rampage

The story of the police manhunt to capture killer Raoul Moat which gripped the nation will be told in a new documentary.

The hour-long programme, which will air 10 years on from the murderous rampage, will tell the story of the manhunt to find the killer – who shot dead his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, left her fighting for her life and blinded a police officer.

Who was Raoul Moat?

The 37-year-old, from Newcastle, has been released from Durham prison, after serving a short sentence for assault, on Thursday, July 1, 2010.

Two days later, in the early hours of July 3, Moat shot dead his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart’s new parther, Chris Brown, outside a home in Birtley and severely wounded her.

He went on to shoot PC David Rathband in the face while he sat in a police car in Newcastle – although PC Rathband survived the shooting, he was blinded in the attack.

The killer then went on the run and a week-long manhunt by Northumbria Police began to capture Moat.

The hunt ultimately led to the 37-year-old dad shooting himself dead while surrounded by armed police near Rothbury, in Northumberland.

When will the documentary air?

Presented by journalist Nicky Campbell, Manhunt: The Raoul Moat story will air on Thursday, July 9, at 9pm on ITV.

What to expect from the documentary?

A decade on, ITV says the ‘landmark’ documentary includes new and rare archive footage and stills to explores the consequences for those caught up in the violent and tragic events and to get the inside track on how he was finally found while providing a vivid insight into Moat’s mindset.

The 60-minute documentary, commissioned by ITV from MultiStory Media Cymru, contains exclusive new interviews with family members, witnesses and journalists who covered the hunt as it unfolded.

ITV Controller of Current Affairs, Tom Giles said: “At a time when media scrutiny has never been higher, and with public services like the police feeling the strain, this programme will delve into the investigation of the case and the actions of Moat in forensic detail, with the intention of immersing viewers in the manhunt, exploring how Moat escaped officers’ clutches for a week.”
