Two arrests after Northumberland 'hit-and-run' leaves man in critical condition

Two men have been arrested after a suspected hit-and-run in Northumberland left a man fighting for his life.

Northumbria Police say a man is in a critical condition after he was hit by a Citroen van in Newbiggin-By-The-Sea this afternoon.

A police statement released this evening, Monday, December 16, said: “At 2.45pm today, police received a report of a road traffic collision involving a man and a blue Citroen Berlingo van on Derwentwater Road.

“It is understood that the man was delivering parcels to an address when another man has got inside of his van which was parked outside of the property.

“For reasons yet to be established the van has collided with the delivery man before leaving the scene.

“The delivery man – aged 49 – was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing to trace the van and officers are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

“Two men – aged 18 and 27 – have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody at this time.

“It is believed that the suspects may have been in the area earlier today before the incident happened.

“Officers are keen to hear from any members of the public who have noticed any suspicious activity in the nearby area.

“Anyone who saw what happened or has any information which could assist us is urged to call 101 quoting reference 600 16/12/19.”
