Councillors said the yellow and black chains had been in place on Monday when a play park inspection was done.

Resident Andy Brown, who went to check, said: “They were padlocked to a screwed on two hasps. They have unscrewed the hasps and taken the lot.”

The purchase of the chains, for £72, had only been agreed at the previous parish council meeting as a safety measure.

It was agreed to report the theft to Northumbria Police.

Parish council chair Alison Nation also revealed that a ticket machine at the Beadnell Bay car park had been vandalised with spray paint.

Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police on 101.
