Northumberland village gets new deterrent in attempt to curb speeding

The interactive speed sign in Powburn is the latest attempt to slow traffic down as it passes through the village on the A697.

Coun Wendy Pattison, local ward member on Northumberland County Council, funded the new sign from her members’ allowance.

She said: “Reducing the speed of vehicles will greatly reduce the risk and severity of any potential accidents and make Powburn a safer place for everyone.”

She has been campaigning for an increase in speeding checks since 2017.

Northumbria Police’s speed camera van has made occasional visits.

But Coun Pattison said: “Vehicles have unfortunately still been speeding through the village and especially at the entry points from the north and south.

“Because of that I decided to buy an interactive 30mph speed sign for the village.”

Even after its installation at the north end of the village, vehicles were still seen travelling at over 30mph.
