Northumberland murderer facing life sentence after killing man in cash row

A murderer is facing a life sentence after killing a man in an attack during a row over a small amount of cash.

Wayne Davison has admitted murdering Colin Rutherford, 34, who died a day after he was found with serious injuries at a house in Blyth in April.

Witnesses claim the men had fallen out over just a small sum of money.

Davison, 37, of Briardale Road, Blyth, has now pleaded guilty to murder at Newcastle Crown Court and has been told he now faces life behind bars when he is sentenced in October.

Judge Paul Sloan told him: "You will appreciate there's only one sentence that can be imposed in respect of the offence of murder and that is a sentence of life imprisonment.

"It will be my duty to consider the minimum term you must serve before you can even be considered for release."

Mr Rutherford was assaulted at a property on Crofton Street, Blyth, on Wednesday, April 29.

Emergency services attended and Mr Rutherford was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries the following day.

At the time of Mr Rutherford's death, Detective Chief Inspector Ed Small, the senior investigating officer on the case, said: “This is a tragic incident that has sadly resulted in Colin’s death.

More details about the case are expected to be revealed when Davison returns to court in October to learn the minimum amount of time he will spend in prison.
