The victim-survivor disclosed the abuse to a trusted professional at school – who immediately informed police.

Rainey was questioned by officers but strenuously denied the allegations before him.

However, following a complex investigation, in May 2025, Rainey was charged in connection with the abuse.

Following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, on May 15, Rainey, of Borough Road, North Tyneside, was found guilty of ten counts of child sex offences.

Following his conviction, he was remanded into custody.

And today (Thursday), he returned to the same court where he was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Rainey will also spend an extra year on extended licence once he is released from custody.

Rainey will spend the rest of his life on the Sex Offenders’ Register. He was also handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to last 25 years.

Leading the case for Northumbria Police was Detective Constable Karen Douglas from the Force’s Safeguarding Department.

Speaking after Rainey’s sentencing hearing, she said: “Stuart Rainey is a predatory paedophile who has consistently shown an attraction to children.

“Because of his vile offending, he has robbed this victim-survivor of her innocence and part of her childhood.

“I want to praise the victim-survivor in this case. Your bravery is the reason this man is now behind bars and will be monitored by police for the rest of his life.

“I want to urge victim-survivors of any sexual abuse to please speak out regardless of when it happened or who the perpetrator was.

“We’ll do everything we can to get you the justice you deserve, no matter the circumstances, or how much time has passed.”

Anyone who has been victim of rape, sexual assault, or any form of sexual abuse is asked to contact police using the ‘Report’ pages of the Northumbria Police website, by using the Live Chat function on the website, or by sending a direct message on social media.

For those unable to contact police this way, call 101.
