Mini Police hit the streets in Northumberland town

A Mini Police group has been formed in Berwick.

The Mini Police initiative was launched by Northumbria Police in 2018 and Holy Trinity CE First School pupils have become the latest recruits.

They were officially appointed by Neighbourhood Inspector John Swan and Sergeant Shona Vickers at Berwick town hall last Friday.

Insp Swan said: “The Mini Police play a vital role in keeping our communities safe and has already seen great results elsewhere in the Force area.

The Mini Police were represented at the Remembrance service in Berwick.

“I’ve spoken with our new recruits and they are very excited and ready to get started and we’re excited to have them.”

The recruits have been handed their own police uniforms and their first deployment was at the town’s Remembrance service.

However, they will also be helping with crime prevention, policing events and engaging with communities to see what concerns they have and finding solutions.

Holy Trinity head teacher Nick Shaw said: “I’m extremely proud that our pupils were the first cohort of Mini Police in Berwick, and I’m looking forward to the children working closely with the police and the local community.”

Insp Swan added: “The Mini Police have been able to help us educate other children about issues impacting them and how they can ask police for help.

“They’re a valuable asset in supporting operational policing in the area and help us engage and support the wider community.

“I can’t wait to work with them - they may be small but their passion for helping is enormous!”
