The victims bravely came forward to report him to the police and an investigation was launched by Northumbria Police's Safeguarding Unit.

Proctor, 48, was questioned by police but he denied the allegations. The case was subsequently sent to trial where a jury saw through his lies and found him guilty of a string of sexual assaults.

On Wednesday, April 21, Proctor was handed a 12-year custodial sentence with an extra year on licence at Newcastle Crown Court after being convicted of four counts of sexual assault and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Detective Constable Danielle Grant, of Northumbria Police, was at the court for sentencing and said the victims were “relieved” at the outcome.

"I was so happy for the victims today,” said Det Con Grant. “It's been such a long traumatic experience for them.”

"Because of a number of issues with Proctor's health, this has been the fourth trial the girls have had to endure and it has been painstaking for them,” she added. “They have shown such bravery and cooperation throughout in the hope that their attacker will one day be brought to justice.

“Today is their day, and I hope that this can help offer some closure for them and give them the justice that they deserve,” said Det Con Grant.

Proctor, of Melrose Avenue, Bedlington, was also handed an indefinite restraining order and an indefinite Sexual Harm Protection Order, which will place strict restrictions on him when he is eventually released from prison.

He will also be forced to sign the sex offenders register for life.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “It's never too late to report sexual abuse and if you have been a victim there are various ways you can report to police. “You can report online by searching 'Northumbria Police Report' or call the non-emergency number 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
