Officers carried out enquiries at addresses on Friday, July 17, and four men and one woman were arrested in connection with the report.

Hargit Bariana, aged 54, of Plessey Road, Blyth, has been charged with four counts of breaching a court order in relation to modern slavery and has been remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance at court.

Two men in their 40s have been released on bail pending further enquiries, while the third man and the woman have been released with no further action.

Inspector Ashley Loader of Northumbria Police said: “Modern slavery has a devastating impact on victims, and court orders play a vital role in managing risk and preventing further exploitation.

“We will continue to work with our partners to safeguard those at risk and take robust action against anyone suspected of these types of offences.

“I would urge anyone who has been affected by modern slavery or exploitation, or anyone who knows someone who may be a victim, to contact us.

“Often people don’t realise they are victims of slavery – so it is important in order to tackle this type of crime that we encourage local communities to stay vigilant and alert.

“We understand how difficult it can be to speak out, but support is available and all reports will be treated sensitively.

“Information from the public can be vital in helping us safeguard vulnerable people and bring offenders to justice."

“With court proceedings now in place, we would urge the community to avoid speculation both online and in the community.”

Anyone with information regarding the report should send Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or use the live chat and report forms on the Force’s website.
