Northumbria Police has carrying out inquiries after a video emerged on Facebook at the weekend, showing two carts being pulled by horses racing on the A189 Spine Road near Cramlington.

It has said lives were put at risk through the actions of those involved, which also saw a number of vehicles following the event as it was filmed from the back of one vehicle.

Officers have appealed for anyone who captured the incident on their dashcam, or knows who was involved, to contact them as a matter of urgency.

Neighbourhood Inspector Neil Hall, of Northumbria Police, said: “We are aware of the video and are carrying out inquiries to identify those involved.

"This type of behaviour is not only illegal, but it is incredibly irresponsible and puts lives of those involved, and other road users, at risk.

"It also causes significant disruption to our region’s road networks and we are taking the matter very seriously.
