The incident happened at about 10.45am on March 22, when a pair of Bernese mountain dogs ran away from a man and woman and went for the two terriers.

After breaking up the attack, the owner of the injured dogs asked for the people’s details, but claimed they gave him false information – including a fake phone number and made up where they were staying and lied about which car they were travelling in.

After the incident, police made an appeal for information and, last weekend, North Northumberland Neighbourhood Inspector Liz Hall made another call for information. She said: “The Burmese mountain dogs have attacked the two smaller dogs causing injury which required treatment at a vets, costing £260.

“The unknown people are believed to have a black Nissan Navara vehicle. If anyone has any information, call 101 and quote ref 439 22/03/18.

“I would also remind the public that they should check the restrictions on beaches to ensure dogs are allowed and ensure that dogs are under their control at all times.”
