Crime gets frosty reception

A winter crackdown by police in north Northumberland has been deemed a success.

Officers in Wooler, Seahouses and Berwick have taken action over the winter months to continue to keep crime down and communities safe.

Extra officers were put on patrol to tackle any pre-empted seasonal issues around retail crime, anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related incidents.

Working together with Northumberland County Council, officers visited licensed premises to ensure retailers were operating legally.

The team has seen a reduction in crime over the festive period and will continue to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour throughout the year.

Berwick Neighbourhood Inspector Dave Garrick said: “Working in partnership has resulted in reductions in crime and disorder. Shoplifting and damage to property usually increases over the festive season.

“Our crime figures are down this year and we want to assure the community we will continue our efforts to maintain this level of success in tackling crime.

“We also had police officers on the streets on busy nights to help intervene at any early indications of disputes to prevent them escalating into serious assaults.”
