A HADSTON man was fined for stealing two bottles of champagne from a Co-op store.
At South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court on Monday, Kevin Mavin, 23, of Hartside Crescent, pleaded guilty to the theft, which took place at 7.30pm on Saturday, July 2 at the Co-op in Widdrington.
Mavin was spotted by a member of staff picking up the two bottles of champagne and walking out without paying.
He was arrested and admitted the offence, saying that he was under the influence of intoxicants at the time and didn’t know why he had done it.
His solicitor said that there was ‘nothing sophisticated about this matter’, highlighting the defendant’s early guilty plea and his lack of previous convictions for similar offences.
Mavin was ordered to pay a fine of £167, £85 court costs and £24 compensation for the champagne.
