Arrest made after reports of 'distressed' man with gun in Northumberland town

A man is in custody following a police search in Wooler, which was prompted by reports of a firearm.

Northumbria Police attended Golden Square, Wooler, on Tuesday, January 28 following reports of a man “in a state of distress” who was initially reported to have a gun.

A police spokesman confirmed officers attended the scene at around 1.45pm, following a call from the North East Ambulance Service.

He said: “Officers were deployed as a precaution with assistance from the National Police Air Service and following a search of the area, a man matching the description was located nearby.

“The man was not in possession of a firearm. He has been arrested and taken into police custody.”

An ambulance service spokeswoman confirmed they called to the aid of an unwell patient in Golden Square at 1.30pm on Tuesday.

When the ambulance arrived the patient was not at the scene.
