The A1 in Northumberland was closed in both directions for more than five hours after a serious accident this afternoon.
The collision between a lorry and a car happened just before 4.30pm on the A1 northbound, near Belford services.
Emergency services are at the scene. The section of road is currently closed and there are diversions in place in both directions, via the B6348 towards Chatton and Wooler and through Adderstone via the coast road.
Police are warning motorists are to be aware of congestion in the area.
7.15pm UPDATE: The A1 at Belford is still closed due to the severe crash this afternoon.
8pm UPDATE: A1 still closed in both directions with diversions in operation.
8.30pm UPDATE: The A1 has now been closed for fours hours after the crash near the Cragmill Road junction, Belford, at 4.30pm.
9pm UPDATE: Accident investigation work is being carried out at the scene of the serious accident on the A1 at Belford. The road remains closed.
9.30pm UPDATE: A1 still closed in both directions at Belford - diversions in place.
10.15pm UPDATE: The road reopens.
10am SATURDAY: Police confirm that a casualty had died at the scene of the crash.
