COUNTY HALL: Better uses for money

We read that Northumberland County Council is to waste £40million, and real costs could rise considerably to £80million, on a new civic centre in Ashington.

The existing civic centre was built in 1981, so it is not old.

Instead of wasting taxpayers’ money on new civic centres, councillors should travel around Northumberland and experience the disgraceful state of our roads.

The money should be spent on the safety of our roads, repairing the large potholes, repainting the white lines and zebra crossings, and cleaning the road signs.

The £40million-plus could improve not just the roads, but the lives of all the people of Northumberland, providing better housing, securing employment for the area and bringing about the regeneration of some town and village centres.
