Northumberland County Council is sponsoring one of the categories at a special prize-giving event to honour unsung heroes.

The Best of Northumberland Awards aim to celebrate community stars who do amazing things.

Readers are being encouraged to nominate individuals and groups in the county who go above and beyond the call of duty and/or show incredible strength and courage in the face of adversity.

The awards are split into 12 categories, recognising a cross-section of local heroes. The county council will be sponsoring the Community Group award.

The accolade honours a group whose time, effort, support and aspirations have improved an area for the benefit of others.

Last year’s winner was Rothbury WI; a recently-launched group which held a vintage fair to raise money for the installation of life-saving defibrillators across the Coquet Valley.

County-council leader Grant Davey said: “As a council, we recognise and appreciate the huge contribution made by community groups throughout Northumberland.

“This has always been a keenly-contested category and we’d encourage people to nominate their favourite group for some well-deserved recognition.”

Organised by Northeast Press – publishers of the Northumberland Gazette, Morpeth Herald, News Post Leader and Tweeddale Press’s Berwick Advertiser – the annual Best of Northumberland Awards are a celebration of bravery, determination, commitment and achievement.

As well as the Community Group award, other categories are Sporting Achievement; Community Champion; Child of Courage; Emergency Services Award; Role Model; Green Champion; Child of Achievement; Fund-raiser of the Year; Good Neighbour; Volunteer of the Year; Lifetime Contribution.

Nominations have started to come in across various categories, but there is still plenty of time to nominate your unsung hero.
