County-born scientist takes her research to Parliament

Joanna Waldie, 33, from Hexham, will be presenting her research into developing micro-electrical devices.

Her research poster will be judged against hundreds of other scientists’ research in the only national competition of its kind, after beating thousands more in getting shortlisted to present in Parliament.

The event will take place on Monday at Portcullis House.

Joanna’s poster will cover her work in developing an electronic device that works on the smallest scale possible, by only transmitting a single electron at a time.

Development of such a device would be crucial for the manufacture of new technology that could measure radioactivity levels and air pollution.

Joanna said: “I am excited to have the opportunity to present our research on quantum measurement technologies at the STEM for Britain exhibition in Parliament.

“I have benefited greatly from Britain’s strong tradition of scientific research and education. I believe that sustained innovation in these areas is fundamental to our future success. It will be a privilege to discuss the latest science and technology research with both policy makers and researchers together at the event.”
