Northumberland County Council has said that it 'covered routes as quickly as possible' after the weather conditions changed in the early hours of this morning.

The council analyses detailed weather forecasts each day before deciding where and when to grit - and this morning’s conditions had not been forecast.

David Laux, head of neighbourhood services at Northumberland County Council, said: "We are aware that there were difficult driving conditions in a number of locations this morning.

"We were out from 4pm yesterday and, in line with the forecasts received, gritted all routes west of the A1. We used increased amounts of salt on higher ground.

"Conditions changed in the early hours of this morning, with temperatures lower than forecasts had predicted, after showers of rain.

"As soon as we became aware of this change in the expected conditions, we mobilised all gritters and were out from 6am covering routes as quickly as possible. We also dealt with requests from and liaised closely with the police.

"We are aware of the issues and worked as quickly as we could to treat road conditions."
