Wooler Parish Council wants to take on the whole of an empty site for community use after it was offered by the county council.

The council had already been developing a business plan and looking at funding for a strip of land on the former school farm field, next to the Glendale Middle School fields.

But at Monday night’s council meeting, members heard that the county council is prepared to transfer the entire site to the parish council.

It follows investigation works on groundwater, in relation to possible use of part of the site as a cemetery extension, found no issues.

Members were keen to take the whole site while it was on offer, particularly because upkeep of what is currently a grass field would not be onerous in the meantime.

Coun Mark Mather also reported on a meeting with various funders and said that while some did not provide grants to parish councils, all of them were positive about the project goals.
